Democrats sweep Congress with historic wins. What now for Europe? Keep building strategic sovereignty.
It’s a Blue-nami!
The Democrats sweep both chambers of Congress with sensational wins: First Democratic senator in Kansas in nearly 100 years. The first in Texas in 38 years, and the first in South Carolina in 28 years.
These are not just fleeting electoral victories. These gains are locked in for six years in traditionally Republican strongholds. They shift the balance of power in the Senate well beyond Trump's presidency. Whether this marks a broader political realignment or merely a temporary backlash against Trump remains to be seen. Much will depend on what the Democrats make of it. Read our 3 Questions to Paul Kohlenberg, Director of our Washington, DC office.
And what does this mean for Europe?
Stay the course: Deepen partnerships with like-minded countries such as Canada (read our 3 Questions to MdB Julian Joswig). Continue building strategic sovereignty. Invest in our own European capabilities.
A Democratic Congress may constrain Trump, but it will not make him any less unpredictable. He could well respond to his electoral defeat by taking an even harder line on the EU. As fortunate as these midterm results are, they solve none of the challenges facing Europe. We must therefore resist any temptation to relax or change course.
Smile and carry on.
