Roderick Kefferpütz has been the Director of the European Union office of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung since May 2023. He has over 15 years’ experience working in think tanks, foundations, and government institutions. His expertise lies in the role of the EU in a changing world order and Europe’s green industrial transformation.
Prior to joining the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, Roderick was a senior analyst at the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) working on China’s increasing influence in Europe. In this capacity, he testified before the European Parliament and appeared as a regular commentator in the international and German print and broadcast media.
From 2017 to 2021 he worked at the State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg as a political advisor, speechwriter, and Deputy Head of Unit for Strategy and Policy. He advised the state’s Minister-President on international and European affairs as well as industrial policy and was a lead member of the State Ministry’s Task Force on Covid-19.
Before that, Roderick spent ten years working in Brussels, including four years as chief of staff to MEP Reinhard Bütikofer. He began his professional career with research positions at the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung offices in Brussels, Moscow, and Warsaw.
He has held fellowships at institutions including the Center for European Policy Studies (CEPS) and Stiftung Neue Verantwortung (SNV), and is currently a Senior Non-Resident Fellow at the Atlantic Council.
Roderick holds an MPhil in Russian and East European Studies from the University of Oxford and a BA in International Affairs from the American University in Paris. In addition to his native German and Dutch, he speaks native-level English, intermediate French and Russian, and basic Mandarin.
