Mareike Moraal

Mareike Moraal joined the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung in 2023 to head the Washington, DC's Energy & Environment Program, which aims to foster transatlantic dialogue on achieving a just and equitable energy transition. She is particularly interested in the democratic legitimacy of environmental policy, i.e. to what extent decisions are made by and for the people.

Before joining the Foundation, Mareike conducted research on European climate policy, carbon pricing, and environmental justice at the University of Groningen, and worked as a lecturer at Maastricht University (the Netherlands). She holds a LLM in Energy and Climate Law from the University of Groningen. She also studied at the Universities of Maastricht, Freiburg, and George Washington University.
