Dr. Bettina Marx

Dr. Bettina Marx  is the director of the HBS office in Ramallah since September 2015, she is a German journalist with extensive experience working in the Middle East.

From 1992 to 2003 and from 2008 to 2015 she worked with Deutsche Welle, formerly for the radio and recently for the Online section. She was based first in Bonn and later in Berlin, specializing in Foreign Affairs and in the Middle East and traveling on numerous occasions to Israel and Palestine to report on events happening there. Between 2003 and 2007 she worked as a correspondent for ARD, the German public Broadcasting Corporation that encompasses 65 Radio stations all over Germany.  In 2009 she published a book on Gaza: “Gaza – reports from a land without hope” (in German). She also published articles and radio programs in different papers and radio stations and lectured about different aspects of the situation in the Middle East.

Ms. Marx studied Jewish studies, history and history of the Muslim countries and wrote her doctoral thesis on Moroccan Jewry in the 19th century.

The German Initiative for the Middle East* very recently awarded her its Media Award, praising her “substantiated and authentic” work that does not shy away from “uncomfortable and provocative” topics.
