Paula Assubuji is the Director of the Heinrich Boll Stiftung in Cape Town, where she works with partners across South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe to support programs grounded in social and environmental justice. She brings more than 30 years of experience in international development across Africa, Germany, and Asia, with a focus on human rights, gender equality, and strengthening civil society.
Much of Paula’s work has been shaped by learning from grassroots organizers, especially women who lead change in their communities. Her roles in Cambodia and within global networks such as Slum Dwellers International gave her the chance to support community driven initiatives and to help build spaces where marginalized voices are centered. She is committed to bridging this community rooted work into policy making spaces so that the priorities of women and other marginalized groups can influence decisions that shape their lives.
Originally from Beira, Mozambique, Paula sees her professional path as part of a wider feminist and justice-oriented movement. She is committed to collective action, global solidarity, and approaches that make room for shared leadership. She continues to work alongside activists, communities, and partners who push for a world rooted in dignity and equality.
