A democratic system respects freedom of expression and different believes. As such populists have democratic legitimacy and attract opinions from the right- and left-wing which are disappointed and suffer from important inequalities. New ways have to be found to argue against this new anti-establishment tendancy and reforms are needed to reply to the arising challenges of modern times.
